Best Senior Photo Locations in Bend & Central Oregon
One of the biggest decisions when planning senior portraits is choosing the right location. Central Oregon offers everything from mountain views and lakes to forests and downtown urban scenery. Here are some of my favorite locations for seniors looking for an epic portrait experience.
Shevlin Park
Best For:
Forest scenery
Pine and Aspen tree backdrops
Natural look
Relaxed vibes
River access
Nearly any time of day with plenty of shade
Why I Love It:
Shevlin Park is one of my favorite locations because of the incredible variety it offers while still feeling peaceful and natural. Between the towering pine trees, beautiful aspens, winding trails, river access, and iconic bridge, it’s easy to create a diverse gallery without ever feeling like you’re in a crowded or busy location. The abundance of shade also makes it one of the most flexible places to photograph throughout the day. Whether you’re looking for a classic Central Oregon feel or simply love being surrounded by nature, Shevlin Park provides a beautiful backdrop that never goes out of style, making this my most versatile natural location for portraits.
Things To Consider:
Can get busy during peak seasons.
Areas near Aspen Hall may be unavailable due to private events or weddings.
Best light near sunset.
Some trails and photo locations require a bit of walking.
River access and trail conditions can vary throughout the year.
Personal favorite time of year is Fall.
Smith Rock
Best For:
Mountain and desert landscapes
Adventurous and outdoorsy look
Dramatic Central Oregon scenery
Golden Hour sessions
Unique, Central Oregon staple portraits
Why I Love It:
Smith Rock is one of the most iconic locations in Central Oregon and offers some breathtaking scenery in the state. The towering rock formations, wide open views, and winding trails create a dramatic backdrop that helps portraits feel timeless and adventurous. For seniors who are visiting from out of the area - or who want photos that showcase the beauty of where they grew up - it’s hard to find a more memorable location. If you want photos that immediately say “Central Oregon.” Smith Rock is one of the best choices
Things To Consider:
Some walking is required to reach the best viewpoints.
The location can be busy, especially during weekends and peak tourist seasons.
Summer afternoons can be very hot, so sunrise or sunset sessions are often ideal - especially for lighting.
$5 parking fee without a state park pass - Parking can also be difficult during busy seasons.
Sparks Lake
Best For:
Mountain views
Water reflections
Sunset/Golden hour
Adventurous seniors
Iconic Central Oregon backdrops
Why I Love It:
Sparks Lake offers some of the most breathtaking scenery in Central Oregon. With panoramic mountain views, calm water, and incredible sunsets, it’s hard to find another location that feels this epic. On the right evening, the reflections of the Cascade Mountains on the lake create backdrops that look almost unreal! For seniors who love the outdoors and want their portraits to showcase the beauty of Central Oregon, Sparks Lake is one of my favorite locations. While Smith Rock offers dramatic cliffs and rock formations, Sparks Lake provides a softer, more peaceful mountain setting.
Things To Consider:
Access is seasonal and only accessible during Summer-early Fall.
The drive is longer than many other Bend locations.
Mosquitoes can be present during certain times of the year.
Weather in the mountains can change quickly making it chilly.
Drake Park & Downtown Bend
Best For:
Variety in a single location
Seniors who want both natural and urban backgrounds
Classic Bend scenery
Multiple outfit changes
Stylish and modern portraits
Seniors who want a little bit of everything
Why I Love It:
Drake Park and Downtown Bend offer one of the most versatile senior portrait experiences in Central Oregon. Within a short walk, you can find river views, bridges, tree-lined pathways, historic architecture, murals, and charming downtown streets. The variety makes it easy to create a gallery that feels diverse and personalized without spending time driving between locations. If you’re a senior who is nervous about choosing a location, Drake Park is a great, safe choice! While Smith Rock offers an epic outdoor adventure look and Sparks Lake gives you mountains and water - Seniors who want a mix of natural scenery and downtown character and are nervous about which location to choose, Drake Park would be a great choice. Portraits that can feature river photos, forest-like backdrops, urban vibes, and architectural photos, all in one session, you’re almost guaranteed to walk away with a diverse gallery which makes it one of my favorite places to photograph and recommend.
Things To Consider:
Downtown areas can be busier during weekends and special events.
Parking may be limited during peak times.
Some areas require more walking than other locations.
Popular spots may occasionally have pedestrians in the background.
Old Mill District
Best For:
Modern and stylish portraits
Urban inspired photography
Fashion forward seniors
Multiple outfit changes
Clean and polished backgrounds
Seniors looking for a contemporary feel
Why I Love It:
The Old Mill District offers a unique blend of modern architecture, walkways, brick textures, river views, and open spaces that create a clean and contemporary look. One of my favorite things about this location is the variety it provides while still feeling cohesive. Whether you’re looking for a more casual outfit or something dressier, the Old Mill provides a versatile backdrop that helps portraits feel polished, stylish, and timeless. If a senior told me “I want my photos to feel modern and trendy,” I’d probably steer them towards the Old Mill District.
Things To Consider:
The area can be busy during weekends, holidays, and summer evenings - especially during concert nights.
Some locations have more foot traffic than other portrait spots.
Certain areas receive direct sunlight, making golden hour (near sunset/sunrise) an ideal time for portraits.
Walking between photo spots is common due to the size of the district.
Choosing the right location is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your senior portraits. Whether you’re drawn to the forests of Shevlin Park, the iconic views of Smith Rock, or the variety found throughout Downtown Bend, each location offers a unique experience and look.
If you’re still unsure which location is the best fit, don’t worry, that’s completely normal. I’m always happy to help seniors choose a location that matches their personality, style, and vision for their session.
