When Should You Book Your Senior Portraits? A Central Oregon Guide

Senior year is an exciting milestone, and your senior portraits are a once in a lifetime way to celebrate it!

One of the most common questions I hear from seniors and parents is:

“When should we book senior pictures?”

The short answer?

Earlier than you probably think.

While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, planning ahead gives you the best chance of getting your favorite locations, your preferred season, and the most flexibility with scheduling. If you’re graduating in Central Oregon and hoping for the best experience possible, here’s what I recommend.

My Recommendation: Book 2-4 Months before your ideal session date

The best senior portrait dates tend to fill quickly, especially here in Central Oregon.

By booking a few month in advance, you’ll have more flexibility to choose:

  • Your preferred season

  • The best time of day for beautiful lighting

  • Popular locations like Smith Rock, Sparks Lake, Shevlin Park, Downtown Bend, or the Old Mill District

  • A backup date in case the weather doesn’t cooperate

Booking early also gives you plenty of time to plan outfits, graduation announcements, prints, and every little detail without feeling rushed.

Waiting until the last minute often means fewer available dates and less flexibility.

The Best Seasons for Senior Portraits in Central Oregon

Summer (June-August)

Summer is the most popular time for senior portraits, and for good reason

You’ll enjoy warm evenings, golden sunsets, mountain views, and access to many of Central Oregon’s most beautiful outdoor locations. With school out for the summer, scheduling is often much easier, making it a favorite season for many seniors.

However, many juniors heading into their senior year aren’t yet thinking about booking their portraits, which means they can easily miss out on Summer dates if they wait too long.

Because summer is also the busiest time of year, it’s a good idea to reserve your session well in advance.

Best For:

  • Mountain Locations

  • Lakes and rivers

  • Warm weather

  • Flexible summer schedules

Fall (September-October)

Fall is another favorite for senior portraits (and in my opinion, the best time of year).

The changing leaves, cooler temperatures, and beautiful golden light create a timeless look that’s hard to beat. Locations like Shevlin Park become especially stunning as the aspens begin to change color.

Keep in mind that yearbook deadlines often fall (pun intended) during this time, so booking early is especially important if you’re hoping for a fall session.

Best For:

  • Fall colors

  • Cozy autumn vibes

  • Cooler temperatures

  • Classic Central Oregon scenery

  • Locations are typically less busy from the tourist season.

Spring (April-May)

Spring brings blooming trees, fresh greenery, and comfortable weather.

It’s also a great option if you missed booking during the summer or fall. As graduation approaches , Cap & Gown sessions become especially popular and are a great way to celebrate the finish line. For this reason, it’s best to book sooner than later if you’re looking to beat the Cap & Gown crowd from booking your preferred dates and/or photographer.

Best For:

  • Fresh Greenery

  • Blooming landscapes

  • Cap & Gown portraits

  • Mild weather

Winter (November-March)

Winter sessions offer something completely different.

Snow covered landscapes and crisp mountain scenery can create dramatic portraits that stand out from the crowd. While Central Oregon weather can be unpredictable, those willing to embrace the season are often rewarded with truly unique images!

Because winter conditions can change quickly, it’s helpful to have a little flexibility with scheduling.

Best For:

  • Snowy landscapes

  • Dramatic scenery

  • Seniors looking for something unique

What if I Don’t Know Exactly When I Want My Session?

That’s completely okay!

Many families book first and then finalize the exact session date later.

Booking early simply reserves your place on the calendar, giving you more options once you’ve decided on the season, location, and overall vision for your senior portraits.

Don’t Wait Until Everyone Else Is Booking

Every year, many seniors don’t begin looking for a photographer until late summer or early fall. By that point, calendars often begin filling quickly.

Planning ahead gives you more flexibility, less stress, and plenty of time to create a senior portrait experience that’s personalized to you. From choosing the perfect location to selecting outfits you’ll love.

Final Thoughts

No matter which season you choose, the best time to book your senior pictures if before your ideal dates begin filling up.

You senior session should feel relaxed and fun that’s tailored to your personality, style, and vision. Planning ahead helps keep things stress free.

If you’re still deciding when, or even where, to schedule your session - don’t worry. I’m always happy to help seniors and families choose the season and location that best fits their goals!
